Lagasse's Stadium 25 percent off for FourSquare

If you get around by checking in to FourSquare, here's an offer to all users.

Casinos are beginning to integrate social media such as Twitter and Facebook into their marketing, now comes FourSquare, which lets your friends know where you are at all times. We bet our parents would've loved it.

We have the app installed on our iPhone and "check in" wherever we go and have seen occasional offers (the person who checks in the most becomes Mayor of that venue).

The sports bar Lagasse's Stadium (at Palazzo) is offering 25 percent off food once you check in at least 3 times via FourSquare.

By the way, you don't actually have to be present at the venue to check in, just be near it. It picks up your GPS location and you select from a list of places to narrow it down further. So it's easy to fool for the purpose of a 25 percent off discount, but then, what would your mother think?

Rumor Las Vegas boutique hotel now open, buy 1 night, get 1 free

rumorvegas.jpg

It's a rumor no longer -- Rumor Las Vegas is now open.

The latest hotel to launch in Las Vegas is a small boutique hotel at 455 E. Harmon (steps from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino), with 150 rooms (all suites) containing patios and private balconies, all wrapped in a quaint 2-story building. We plugged in a few dates and found rooms in the $140 range for the weekend and $80 for weekdays.

Siegel Group (which runs Gold Spike and similar converted boutique hotel Artisan) purchased the old St. Tropez site for $10.5 million and invested $4 million into the conversion.

A buy 1 night, get 1 night free offer is running if you book before July 31 (use code WEB1) and stay before Aug. 31.

Though the hotel is open, its official grand opening is in September.

Flying Pasties to help modesty at airport full-body scanners

pasties.jpg

If you're feeling rather naked walking through McCarran's new full-body airport scanners, you have an option.

As part of standard security measures, passengers may be directed to a secondary screening and can either be patted down or taken to controversial full-body scanners, controversial because scanned images are a bit revealing (though they're not viewed at the scanning location for all to see).

For $10 (for the male sticker) to $20 (for female), you can purchase scanner-proof stickers at Las Vegas-based FlyingPasties.com, designed to slap over your private parts (over your underwear).

Their slogan: "Giving you back your right to privacy."

Stickers are decorated with funny sayings, peace signs, and other designs.

The company hasn't guaranteed the stickers are made out of anything special to thwart security from really eyeing your naughty parts, but they're at least good for a laugh.

Mayweather to decide by tonight whether to fight Pacquiao

decisiontime.jpg

A countdown clock has been installed at Top Rank, displaying the deadline that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has till midnight tonight before he needs to accept the agreement to fight Manny Pacquiao on Nov. 13 in Las Vegas. Or move on.

If Mayweather has not accepted by then, Top Rank will look for a new fighter for Pacquiao.

Detroit Pistons not moving to Las Vegas

Reports of the Detroit Pistons moving to Las Vegas have been highly exaggerated.

It's been rumored that Las Vegas could finally get an NBA team if a new arena were built with public funds, and that the Pistons were in the running.

The whispering began when an investment group stated it had a team under contract and, separately, the Pistons were up for sale.

But the NBA has denied not just the Pistons, but any NBA team is under contract.

Looks like it may be awhile before we have pro sports in Las Vegas.

Free Thai Cashew Chicken at Panda Express

We love us some Panda. Express, that is.

And now, to advertise their new Thai Cashew Chicken entree, you can stop by Panda Express to try it for free. Not just a toothpick sample that they're supposed to offer as a greeting to each customer (really, it's part of their training), but a whole small carton.

Just print out the coupon at this link. No purchase necessary.

The coupon is only good today, July 14.

Call in advance to see whether Panda Express restaurants within casinos (such as Station or The Palms) will accept the coupon; they likely won't. Your best bet is your neighborhood Panda.

Free pass to G2E

While we're at it, you can also fill out the form at this link to get a free exhibit badge to this year's Global Gaming Expo, or G2E.

It takes place Nov. 16-18 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

CES concentrates on upcoming electronics; G2E focuses on upcoming casino games, primarily slot machines. You'll be able to see and play the latest in technology from all the slot manufacturers before they hit the casinos. Some games are prototypes that won't be released for another couple years.

Like the CES pass, the form will ask you for information you may not have. You can simply make it up, as you'll be emailed a barcode and only need to take that to the registration counter to scan in exchange for a paper badge and holder.

The link above worked without a code, but if it doesn't, you can enter BEXT97 as the priority code.

Free pass to CES

It's still a ways away, but if you want to check out the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for free, register at this link.

Next year's CES show takes place Jan. 6-9, 2011 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, and the free Exhibits Plus Pass will give you access to the floor exhibits as well as keynote addresses, SuperSessions, TechZones, and more.

You'll be asked for a company name when signing up, but there's no verification in person. Just your ID is required or a printout of your verification letter.

You must register by Sept. 30 in order to receive your free pass. Thereafter, there'll be a charge.

The Riviera files bankruptcy

Riviera Holdings Corp., which owns the Riviera in Las Vegas, filed for bankruptcy today.

Also filing was Riviera Operating Corp. (which runs Riviera Hotel) and Riviera Black Hawk (which runs the same name casino in Colorado).

The companies filed under Chapter 11 in Nevada, and the businesses will continue operating as normal while restructuring.

Riviera Holdings showed assets from $100 million to $500 million, with liabilities listed in the same range.

The Riviera casino opened in 1955 and is one of the few old Vegas casinos remaining.

Opportunity Village thrift store in yesterday's explosion

A three-alarm fire yesterday destroyed almost 40 percent of Opportunity Village's thrift store downtown (Hoover and South First St.), with part of the roof collapsed.

The 50-year-old building went up in flames in the early evening, just one block from another explosion earlier that morning.

Along with the thrift store, the building acts as a job training program for the disabled.

To make a donation to the store, or if you have space to contribute, call (702) 259-3741.

Investigators are determining what caused the explosions and whether the two are related.

Hash House A Go Go to open at M Resort

hashhouse.jpg

The most excellent Hash House A Go Go is already expanding.

A gluttonous place for locals off Sahara (with the original in San Diego), the proudly twisted farm food restaurant recently expanded to take over the upstairs buffet at Imperial Palace, which gave us a reason to go to IP (but park at Harrah's, it's connected and a better walk than the IP garage).

In late fall at M Resort, expect to see another Hash House in the space that's currently housed by Red Cup Cafe. The cafe will close next week for a 3-month remodel.

We visited Hash House A Go Go last week at IP and had the huge (and delicious) order of chicken and waffles.

M Resort is getting more and more local-ized, with a 14-screen Galaxy movie theater also on the drawing board.

A Review of the 'Pearl Poker' by PokerPens.com

product_pearl_370x370.jpg
The Pearl Poker Pen a creation of PokerPens.com - Holly and Maple wood inlays rhodium plated fittings.

Despite professing my love for Monte Blanc and my exceedingly high standards for writing instruments Poker Pens sent along a Poker Pearl for review. After a few days of use and scrutiny I can sum it up my experience in two words: pleasantly surprised.

The Good

  • The Size and Weight - There is a nice heft to the instrument, and it's of the proper length to rest comfortably in the hand, even for extended periods.
  • The Fittings - Everything locks together with the crisp precision one expects from top notch luxury. The rhodium plated inlays are tasteful and the metal takes full advantage of both the polish and matte finish. Best of all, they are properly attached to the cap so as to never interfere while writing.

  • The Writing - The act of writing is an absolute joy with this pen, the weight offers just the pressure needed so the tip doesn't just write on the surface,it glides effortless leaving a smooth and even flow of ink in it's wake.

product_pearl_370x250.jpg

The Bad

  • Very slight asymmetry with the pip's, most noticeable the club, although this is a testament to the hand-crafted process.

  • No identification Marks - I always enjoy looking at the various serial numbers, country of manufacture, and edition numbers that identify quality objects, but alas, only the ink cartridge offers any identification.

  • The Price Point - While steep at $300 (US) for many, those that make poker a lifestyle will enjoy the quality of this writing instrument for a lifetime.

The Verdict

For anyone that lives the life of a successful professional poker player and is looking for a pen that compliments the lifestyle this is a great choice as are the other pens offered via pokerpens.com.

Refills: Schmidt steel cartridge rollerball (can be purchased from the site @ 4.95 ea.)
